US 54 begins in western Illinois and heads southwest into Missouri, through Jefferson City and on to Lake of the Ozarks. Here the route turns west to cross the rest of Missouri and most of Kansas, passing through Wichita along the way and leaving the state at Liberal. US 54 continues southwest again for the rest of its trip, running through the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas before beginning its long trek through New Mexico. The route then crosses back into Texas to end in El Paso, a few feet from the Mexico border.

We traveled US 54 from end to end in July 2017, taking these photographs along the way.
